EPS EPOXY SURFBOARDS
After the devastating collapse of Clark Foam, most shapers were stuck
without polyurethane foam. Another option was epoxy(EPS) foam.
This type of foam is extremely light and “spongey”, when compared to
poly foam, which is much more dense and harder to squeeze.
Epoxy surfboards are glassed with epoxy resin, which is very durable.
The combination of the EPS foam and the epoxy resin makes for a very
lightweight, yet strong surfboard. At Sauritch Surfboards, we use Resin
Research epoxy resin, which is the strongest, most reliable epoxy resin
on the market.
Due to the buoyancy of epoxy foam, better paddling power is achieved.
A drawback of this type of foam would be really windy days. They tend to bounce around when wind becomes a factor and the water becomes
choppy. Aside from that, they are very lively and durable.
EPS foam is more difficult to hand shape than polyurethane foam, due to the texture of the foam and harder to obtain a sharp edge in the tail area. Fortunately, the glasser can create a good edge with the use of resin and some good fine tuning by the sander.
Epoxy resin can also be used on polyurethane foam for some added strength and overall longevity of the surfboard. Epoxy resin is not as brittle as the standard polyester resin, most commonly used and tends to have longer lasting capabilities.
Sauritch Surfboards shapes many epoxy surfboards every month and has
satisfied customers, continuing to order their boards with EPS epoxy.
They are very durable and easy to maneuver in different wave conditions.
